  • Making payment according to UWA instructions.
  • Receiving confirmation of your permit.

If you plan to travel independently, start the process early because permits can sell out months in advance.

When reserving your permit, you’ll typically need:

  • Full name as it appears on your passport
  • Nationality
  • Passport number
  • Preferred trekking date
  • Preferred trekking sector or park

Make sure all details match your travel documents exactly to avoid issues on the day of your trek.

What Happens on Trekking Day?

Most visitors arrive at the park headquarters around 7:00 AM for registration and a briefing. Rangers explain trekking rules, safety procedures, and gorilla behavior before assigning groups to specific gorilla families. The trek itself can last anywhere from one to six hours depending on where the gorillas are located that day. Some families may be found relatively quickly, while others require a longer hike through dense forest and steep terrain. Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed exactly one hour in their presence. That hour tends to pass faster than expected. Watching a silverback rest peacefully, seeing juveniles play in the trees, or observing a mother care for her infant creates memories that stay with travelers for years.
