What is a Gorilla Permit?
A gorilla permit is an official authorization issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority that allows visitors to trek and spend one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family in the wild. Because mountain gorillas are critically protected and tourism is carefully regulated. Only a limited number of permits are available each day. The permit system helps to protect the gorillas while ensuring that tourism directly supports conservation efforts and local communities. Without a valid permit, you can not be allowed to participate in gorilla trekking.
Where can you see Gorillas in Uganda?
Uganda is home to half of the remaining mountain gorillas in the entire world. These are found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park the leading gorilla trekking destination and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
Bwindi is Uganda’s most famous gorilla trekking destination and is home to nearly half of the worlds remaining mountain gorillas. The park has over 21 habituated gorilla trekking families which are distributed in different sectors. Bwindi is divided into four sectors namely Nkuringo, Rushaga, Buhoma and Ruhija.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is found in southwestern Uganda on the borders of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. The park offers a more intimate trekking experience with fewer visitors. Both parks provide excellent opportunities to see mountain gorillas and the permit price is the same regardless of which park you choose.
How much does a Gorilla Permit Cost?
As of the 2026-2028 Uganda Wildlife Tariff, gorilla trekking permits are priced as follows;
- Foreign non-residents: 800usd per person
- Foreign Residents: 700usd per person
- East African citizens: 300,000ugx per person
This permit allows you one hour with the gorillas after the encounter. However, there is gorilla habituation experience which is more like gorilla trekking but this allows you four hours with the gorillas. Gorilla habituation is different that the gorilla family you will track will not be fully habituated compared to gorilla trekking where the families are fully habituated. The gorilla habituation costs 1,800usd for foreign non residents. The permit may seem expensive but the permit fees are used to support gorilla conservation, park management, ranger salaries, research and community development projects around the protected areas.
How to get a Gorilla Permit in Uganda?
Booking gorilla permits in Uganda involves two options namely;
Booking Through a licensed Tour Operator
This is the easiest and most common method. A reputable Ugandan tour company can check permit availability, reserve your permit, arrange accommodation, transportation, and handle all the logistics surrounding your trek. Many travellers choose this for a smooth safari and for the fact that permit availability changes quickly mostly during the peak season.
Book directly through Uganda Wildlife Authority
Independent travelers can also book directly through UWA.

- Receiving confirmation of your permit.
If you plan to travel independently, start the process early because permits can sell out months in advance.
What Information Do You Need to Book?
When reserving your permit, you’ll typically need:

What Does the Permit Include?

What Happens on Trekking Day?
Most visitors arrive at the park headquarters around 7:00 AM for registration and a briefing. Rangers explain trekking rules, safety procedures, and gorilla behavior before assigning groups to specific gorilla families. The trek itself can last anywhere from one to six hours depending on where the gorillas are located that day. Some families may be found relatively quickly, while others require a longer hike through dense forest and steep terrain. Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed exactly one hour in their presence. That hour tends to pass faster than expected.
