This 3-Day Fly-In Safari to Murchison Falls National Park offers an immersive experience in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area. The trip combines game drives, a boat cruise to the dramatic Murchison Falls, and aerial views of the park’s varied landscapes. Ideal for travelers short on time but eager for rich wildlife encounters and iconic scenery. Located in northwestern Uganda, Murchison Falls National Park spans 3,893 square kilometers, straddling the districts of Masindi, Nwoya, Kiryandongo, and Buliisa. It’s part of the larger Murchison Falls Conservation Area, which includes Karuma and Bugungu Wildlife Reserves.
The park was first established as a game reserve in 1926 and later designated as a national park in 1952, making it Uganda’s oldest. It’s named after Murchison Falls, where the mighty Nile River is funneled through a 7-meter gap in the rocks and crashes 43 meters down, creating one of the most powerful waterfalls on Earth.
Murchison Falls National Park is known for its diverse ecosystems savannah, wetlands, riverine forest, and woodlands and supports over 76 mammal species and 450+ bird species. The Nile bisects the park, creating a lush northern section ideal for game viewing and a more forested southern section.
Day 1: Fly to Murchison Falls National Park – Afternoon Game Drive
Begin your 3-Day Fly-In Safari to Murchison Falls National Park journey with a short scheduled flight from Entebbe International Airport to Pakuba Airstrip inside Murchison Falls National Park. The flight takes about 1 hour, offering incredible aerial views of the Albertine Rift Valley, Lake Albert, and the winding Nile River. Upon landing, you’ll be welcomed by your guide and transferred to your lodge for check-in and lunch. After a brief rest, head out for your first game drive in the northern sector of the park. This part is rich in wildlife and ideal for spotting elephants, Rothschild giraffes, buffaloes, Jackson’s hartebeest, Ugandan kob, lions, and if you’re lucky, leopards.
The golden light of late afternoon enhances both wildlife visibility and photography before returning to your lodge in time for sunset views over the savannah. Dinner is served as you listen to the distant call of hyenas or hippos grunting in the nearby river.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive & Afternoon Boat Cruise to bottom of falls
After an early breakfast, embark on another game drive, this time focusing on different routes for a wider range of sightings. The cool morning hours are ideal for predator activity, so keep an eye out for lions on the hunt or elusive leopards lounging in the trees. Birds are also active, and you may spot species like the Abyssinian ground hornbill, grey crowned crane, and red-throated bee-eater before returning to the lodge for an early lunch and some downtime. Enjoy the pool or relax on your private veranda with views over the park.
In the afternoon, set off for a boat cruise on the Nile toward the base of Murchison Falls. This is one of the park’s signature experiences. The calm cruise brings you close to pods of hippos, crocodiles, elephants drinking at the water’s edge, and flocks of water birds. As you near the falls, the river narrows and the thunderous roar of water grows louder. The boat stops near the base of the falls, giving you time to soak in the sheer force and beauty of the natural spectacle perfect for photos.
Adventurous guests can disembark here and hike to the top of the falls (about 45–60 minutes), where you’re rewarded with breathtaking views from above. Your guide will pick you up by vehicle afterward and head back to the lodge for dinner and a relaxed evening. Enjoy storytelling by the campfire or stargazing under clear skies.

Day 3: Sunrise Delta Cruise – Fly Back to Entebbe
Start your final day with an early sunrise boat cruise heading downstream toward the Nile Delta. This is where the river fans out into Lake Albert. This area is quieter and ideal for birdwatching and tranquil wildlife sightings in the soft morning light. The delta is a prime birding spot, especially for those hoping to see the iconic shoebill stork. This is a rare and prehistoric-looking bird found in papyrus swamps. Other notable birds include Goliath herons, African jacanas, kingfishers, malachite kingfishers, papyrus gonoleks, and saddle-billed storks.
Along the riverbanks, you might also spot elephants, waterbucks, and hippos emerging from the shallows. The calm, scenic setting is a peaceful contrast to the thunderous Murchison Falls. Therefore giving you a final, more reflective moment with the park.
Return to the lodge for a late breakfast and time to freshen up. Depending on your lodge’s location and flight schedule, you’ll have some time to relax and do final packing. Your guide will transfer you to Pakuba Airstrip, arriving in time for your midday flight to Entebbe. As you lift off, you’ll have a last chance to take in the aerial view of the Nile. Winding through savannah, a fitting farewell to one of Uganda’s most iconic parks.
