Lake Saka In Kibale

Lake Saka in Kibale is situated in Kabarole district, western region of Uganda. The estimate terrain elevation above sea level is 1591 meters. Lake Saka Kibale is a large inland body of standing water. The main common activities carried out include; boating, canoe riding as well as Bird watching. Lake Saka is the largest lake in the immediate vicinity of Fort Portal and one of the most attractive. Not strictly speaking a crater lake, Lake Saka is one of the few lakes that supports fishing for commercial harvesting.

Saka is safe to swim in. The lake lies on church land, so no tourist facilities exist, and the plans to build a campsite along the lake shores remain unclear and inactive. A local tour operator in Uganda, such as Vibrant Holiday Safaris, can arrange cycling tours around this area, and these tours continue past the lake area into Kibale Forest National Park.

It is also possible to take a guided nature walk around Lake Saka to Amabeere Caves in a couple of hours. This follows a path running to the right fork that goes downhill to form a river and leads to the Saka road near Kagote prison. You can access the lake directly from Fort Portal. From the town centre, follow Lugard road towards Mountains of the Moon Hotel for a bout 1km, then immediately after passing the golf course, turn left to Saka Road. Lake Saka Kibale is about 7km out of town, following the two adjoining craters. Private transport offers the best way to access the area, but prepare to walk through Kaitabagoro Crater Lake.
