Nestled within the vibrant city of Kisumu, on the picturesque shores of Lake Victoria, lies the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary. This verdant oasis, spanning less than 1km², was officially gazetted in 1992. In March 2010, it was rebranded as “a lakeshore walk with impalas,” encapsulating the essence of this unique urban sanctuary. The sanctuary boasts an astonishing array of flora, comprising trees, grasses, and herbs, which provide a habitat for a diverse range of fauna. The sanctuary is home to both free-ranging and captive animals, including an impressive collection of birds, with over 115 species recorded. Notably, the sanctuary is proud to host all the Big Five game animals, with the exception of elephants.
Visitors can embark on guided nature trail circuits, carefully designed to showcase the sanctuary’s natural beauty and biodiversity. These trails offer a unique opportunity to connect with nature and observe the fascinating wildlife up close.
The Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is committed to conservation and education. Annually, the sanctuary hosts the Kisumu Impala Conservation Boat Race event in November. This exciting event aims to raise awareness about wildlife conservation, with a particular focus on the endangered sitatunga antelope. Beyond its role as a tourist destination, the sanctuary serves as a vital site for ecology and wildlife research and education. Scientists and students alike can explore the sanctuary’s diverse ecosystems, gaining valuable insights into the complex relationships between species and their habitats.
