What To Know When Going For A Game Drive
What to know when going for a Game drive, Embarking on your first safari can be thrilling and yet overwhelming at the same time. However, worry less because Vibrant Holiday Safaris has put together some information that you should know while on your safari.
It is important to know that humans are a threat to the wild animals which is why they must take caution and listen to the guides during the game drives. Below is some of the information one should know before embarking on any game drive safari.
Do’s and Don’ts during a Safari
Clothes you wear must cover you fully no matter the season. You never know what kind of wild plants and insects you may come in contact with. Also recommend layers instead of one item of clothing. Remember, you should blend in with the natural environment hence wear basic colors i.e. white, brown, grey and black and avoid polka dots, fluorescent colors etc.
Maintain silence and be calm at all times. This helps in 2 ways to say the least. Firstly it increases the chances of sighting as animals don’t get distracted. Secondly it helps you to track minutely the sights and sounds of the jungle which are critical in tracking wildlife. My words of discretion here; please avoid getting infants and toddlers in the jungle as they are best placed to violate this principal.
Respect the home of the animals and do not smoke or litter the forest floor with garbage. The jungle and all that is in it is not ones personal property. Never pick up any flowers, stones etc as a souvenir.
Never get too close to an animal. Minimum distance one should maintain is 20 feet. Don’t try to touch or feed animals.
Precautions during a Safari
At no points must you get out of your safari vehicle unless you are in a designated area. Always ensure you are in the company of an authorized safari guide during wildlife safaris.
For whoever wants to take pictures, make sure you carry a good camera while in the jungle. There are several basic entry models by manufactures like Nikon, Canon and Olympus available for amateurs but the lens you carry is imperative. Recommend a macro lens of type 18-55 mm and a basic zoom lens of type 80-200 mm as the bare essentials for good wildlife photography. Be well stocked on films if you are not into digital mode and yes please keep that flash turned off.
Carry a good pair of binoculars especially if you are into birding. Olympus and Nikon manufactures some good ones.
Protective accessories like sunglasses, sunscreens , insect repellant creams are a must.
