Udzungwa Mountain National Park

Located in the Iringa region, south of Tanzania’s capital, Dodoma, Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a stunning tract of mountain forests. The park spans 1,990 square km, bordering the Ruaha River, and is part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains range that stretches across Kenya and Tanzania. It was gazette in the 1992 by the prince of Netherlands, prince Bernhard who was a co-founder of the World-Wide Fund. The park was named after Wasungwa, a kihehe word translated as people who live on the sides of the mountains.

Officially established in 1992 Udzungwa National park was created from former Forest Reserves, including Mwanihana, Iwonde, Nyanganje, and parts of Matundu and the West Kilombero Forest Reserves with a primary goal of establishing the park was to protect the mountains’ vital water catchment areas and unique biological values.
