Tourism Destinations to visit In 2023/2024 in Uganda

Uganda’s tourism sector suffered a lot of sets back during the COVID-19 lockdown from March 2020 making the number of tourists in Uganda reduce to half of the recent year’s population since the borders are now opened and the world at large, the statistics have started changing.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

The Bwindi impenetrable forest is home to mountain Gorillas with the main activity being Gorilla trekking. Bwindi has over 400 Gorillas and 12 habituated families in the forest and also the forest is blessed with over 500 species of other animals including the primates like L’hoest monkeys and different birds. The Bwindi impenetrable forest is located in the southwestern part of Uganda and 474.1 kilometres from Kampala.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is also located in the southwestern part of Uganda like Bwindi impenetrable where you will find nature in the wilderness. The activity there is also Gorilla trekking with one family to be trekked compared to the 12 in Bwindi which means few tourists are allowed to trek them at a time.

Mgahinga is the sole home of golden monkeys in the country thus making it one of the places to be visited in 2024/2024.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park holds a cultural significance since for many years the Batwa people who were hunters and fruit gatherers lived there. Batwa since they were evicted from the forest, they lead tourists into the forest as they teach the tourists about their heritage and survival in the forests on a walk which is called the Batwa trail.

Mgahinga National Park is characterized by three extinct volcanoes which can be added to your safari where you can get to Mountain Gahinga, Sabinyo, and Muhavura which are all part of the Virunga range that are along the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Gahinga is a local word that means a pile of volcanic stones which means that a climb to any of them gives you the opportunity to view two or three countries and other beautiful sights.

Kibale National Park

The park is known for the highest concentration of Chimpanzee in the country, Kibale is a blessed tourism destination in the country which is the best research area in the continent where you get people doing research on the forest’s fish species, ecosystems, chimpanzees, and other primates and most especially the dwarf galago which takes a total number of primate species in Kibale from 12 to 13 out of the 20 found around the country.

The other primates in Kibale are Olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and the black and white colobus among others, and the forest boasts over 375 bird species with beautiful scenery.

National parks

Uganda is blessed with 10 national parks making the country one of the most looked safari destinations where most of the national parks have the big 4 apart from Kibale, Mgahinga, and Bwindi national parks.

Some of the national parks that have the big 4 of animals include; Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, Kidepo Valley, Mountain Elgon, and Rwenzori mountains all these national parks give a beautiful life experience to the park that you choose.

Mountains

For people who love hiking, Uganda is still blessed with mountains and hills for the hike, and the best mountains for a long hike are Rwenzori which borders the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Elgon which borders Kenya.

For the shorter hikes, there are 3 Virunga mountains of Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhavura are the best options these hikes last for six hours whereas the long ones last for more than a week.

River Nile

The Nile River is the longest river in Africa and has its source in Lake Victoria in Uganda many tourists flock to Jinja to see the river that pours its water into the Mediterranean Sea starts from. Other tourists go over to the Victoria Nile in Western Uganda to view the beautiful river forces from the top of Murchison Falls in between the rocks and the activities that tourists can enjoy include Kayaking, water tubing, and rafting on the Nile in Jinja and River Nile is the great place where you can relax your mind from the stress of the two years’ pandemic.
