Source of the Nile

Source of the Nile is one of the top visited tourist destinations in Uganda which marks the beginning of the longest river in Africa. The Nile flows to the North of northeastern Africa and is recorded as the longest river in Africa and the second longest in the world after the Amazon river which is the longest in the world.

River Nile is a drainage cover for over 11 countries which include Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Eritrea, the Republic of Sudan, South Sudan, and Egypt since it is 6,750km long.

River Nile has two major tributaries which are the Blue Nile and the White Nile which are the headwaters and the stream of the Nile. The Blue Nile is the source of silt and water whereby the White Nile is considered the longest since it raises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa which is found in Rwanda and Burundi, flowing north through Tanzania. The Blue Nile starts from Lake Tana in Ethiopia and flows into Sudan from the south East where the two rivers meet north of the Sudanese capital of Khartoum.

The north section of the river flows north through the Sudanese desert to Egypt which ends in the large delta flowing into the Mediterranean Sea, Egyptian Civilization, and the Sudan kingdom started depending on the river in the ancient days, and most of the historical sites of Ancient Egypt and cultural sites are found along the River banks.

The source of the Nile sometimes is regarded as Lake Victoria but its river Kagera which flows into Lake Victoria near Bukoba a town in Tanzania is regarded as the longest feeder which started from Nyungwe national park.

Ruyironza and Nyabarongo in Burundi also flow from the Nyungwe forest in Rwanda whereby the two rivers meet near Rusumo Falls on the Tanzania-Rwanda border.

River Nile leaves Lake Nyanza at the Ripon Falls which are located in Jinja and therefore flows north for some 140km to Lake Kyoga which is part of the approximately 200 kilometers river section which starts from the western shores of Lake Kyoga and then flows to the west south of Masindi port where it will turn to the north making the half-circle to the East and North until the Karuma falls.
