Vibrant Holiday Safaris brings you Papaya Lake Lodge which is an European family-owned midrange accommodation in Uganda surrounded by the lush, evergreen landscapes of the Uganda Great Crater Lakes region. The lodge is set between two extinct volcanoes against the turquoise waters of the Lyantonde and Kifuruka lakes and with exhilarating views over the majestic Ruwenzori Mountain Range.

A dramatic landscape of crater lakes cupped under steep hillsides, the area south of Fort Portal offers guests a scenic retreat ideal for long walks and road cycling. For guests with young children, the elderly, or just pressed for time, Papaya offers a shorter walk which includes crater lakes, a community visit, and several viewpoints.

Located 20 minutes drive away from the chimpanzee tracking trailhead at Kanyancu in Kibale National Park, Papaya Lake Lodge also offers a great base for the experiences in the Kibale forest jungle.

Accommodation At Papaya Lake Lodge

Papaya Lake Lodge offers nine spacious and bright cottages on the extinct volcano crater’s slope with breathtaking views of Lyantonde Lake. Each cottage offers complete privacy, hidden from view by a natural screen of green treetops.

Eight of the cottages feature two beds (one king-size and one single), local stone-decorated bathrooms with shower units, and verandas equipped with deckchairs. The single family-cottage is a two-level villa with three bedrooms, a living room with a fireplace, a spacious ensuite bathroom, and a large terrace.

Papaya styled the rooms with calm colors, subtle accessories, original interior design, and simple but comfortable furniture. However, it is the lush, green vegetation that makes it so easy to relax after an adventurous day in Kibale Forest.

Papaya Lake Lodge’s cuisine is a mixture of elements from around the World, European and African art of cooking. Apart from sitting in the restaurant for their meals, guests can choose to have their meals outside to avoid COVID-19 contact. There are also children’s menu choices.

Activities At Papaya Lake Lodge

After a 30 minute drive through the lush Fort Portal landscape to the trailhead, guests can join guided chimpanzee hikes from Kanyanchu Park Headquarters into the forest jungle, searching for the chicky chimp bands. Usually, the chimpanzee tracking walks last 2-3 hours and are restrictive to eight people. The experience of viewing wild chimps up close can be incredible, but it has to be said that here in Kibale, the chances of really intimate.

After your exciting encounter with chimpanzee troops, sunbathe or take a dip in the well-elevated pool with the greatest view on the property. You can also take a guided walk around the crater lakes surrounding the property, visit a community, or chill back in the lodge’s fresh, natural surroundings.

Bird lovers will be interested to know that there are 325 species of birds recorded in the national park. The list includes the six species endemic to the Albertine Rift region, like the black-capped Apalis, collared Apalis, purple-breasted sunbirds, blue-headed sunbirds, dusky crimson wings, and red-faced woodland warblers.

There are some lovely walks in the area, including the walk in the small Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary in hopes of meeting more primates in the east of the park. A network of trails in Sebitoli Forest provides further opportunities for viewing various primates and birds on the forest’s northern side.

Amabere ga Nyina Mwiru Caves is a renowned cave system located near Fort Portal, around 15km from Kibale Forest, and is considered one of Uganda’s seven wonders and great to visit.
